Kiwanis Kart Klub Race Report June 6th

Zeke McKeown

The sun was finally shining on a beautiful Thursday evening at Brighton Speedway.  The Kiwanis of Trenton Kart Klub cranked up the 2019 racing season with 47 contestants ready to race in 8 separate classes.  Hotlaps and heat races ran through smoothly and set the stage for some exciting feature races.
First off the grid was 5 fast 5-7 year olds in the Box Stock 1 division – paced by #0 Kolton French and #19 Bentley Davidson.  The ABC Taxi sponsored #0 hit the toll meter and put the gas to the floor as he rounded on to the front straight, the race through the field saw drivers feeling out their karts and getting faster and faster as the laps clicked off.  Never looking back or letting up French picked up his first win of the season, followed by #95 Cole Robson, #19 Davidson, with Tate Black and Blake Gregory in the fifth spot.
Next up the Rookie 1 class looking at the super smooth clay oval as they took to the track led by #99 Ethan Dobb and #89 Colby Ellis.  Dobb was first on the gas followed closely by Colson Gregory, the pair took off and left the field initially until yellow slowed the pace. Dobb in the Tweed Dental #99 was able to hold on for the win despite multiple challenges from behind, Gabe Miller came home with a 2nd followed by Colson Gregory, Colby Ellis and Colby Butcher in the #29 rounding the top 5.
Hot off the fourth corner was the Jr. Sportsman 1 class. #71 Lawns We Do machine of Trevyn McCrillis looked like he spent the whole off season planning for this race as he played the race out perfectly, keeping any contender outside of striking distance and picking up the early win and points lead.  Gordie Miller had a nice clean run for 2nd place and #57 of Jacob Down made a late race pass to get 3rd over Cooper McKeown.
Box Stock 2 rolled up to the green flag from starter Leslie Mowat with #31 Brody Davidson pulling a commanding lead over the pack. That was until a slight slip of the wheel coming through the 2nd corner caused a last lap spin for the leader – yellow flags flew and the field was reset for a one lap battle.  #0 Kolton French was able to steal the victory over Rhys and Bryce Massey, Davidson salvaged a 4th followed up by Trenton’s Tyler Green.
#09 Gavin Quaterna and #22 of Nolan Chatten paced the field in the Rookie 2 division. The McIntosh Motors sponsored #22 took the outside line and put his kart on a rail on the way to his win. Hard charger Ethan Humphrey did all that he could to make up ground and finished up 2nd. A great race back in the pack between Quaterna, #9 of Charley Smith-Wilson and #33 Caydie Lucas.
Next on the docket was the Jr. Sportsman 2 division with James Markland and the Image Landscaping kart of Carson Down holding the field in the ready position.   Early it was all the #21 of Markland with the #92 of Keira Turner finding her way to the 2nd place and reeling in the leader.  A late race pass gave Turner the lead and the win followed by Markland, Down, Tyson Gregory, and Ryan Greig closing out your top five.
#02 Holly Denard and #11 Cole McKeown were on point for the Jr. Restricted feature.  A very exciting race with multiple lead changes between the two thrilled fans!  A last chance effort by Denard on McKeown resulted in a yellow/checked finish with McKeown in the Bellevue Fabricating kart taking the win, followed out of nowhere by Kaitlyn O’Blenis, Rush Waite, Lexi Lucas and Geoffrey Boates in 5th.
With the sun setting behind the grandstands the last race of the night rolled out led by #3 Carter Rhodes and #48 Chandler LeClair.  The Stock Lite class made very fast work of their 20 lap feature with Rhodes getting his first win. Carquest Trenton kart of LeClair 2nd, followed by Koen O’Hara, and Anthony Renaldi.
Next Thursday is an off week for the Kart Klub.  Join us June 27th at 6:45pm to see the stars of tomorrow on the little track.
