Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week – May 16: Wade Purchase

By Clayton Johns

IMG_7117Wade Purchase’s first career win in Brighton Speedway’s Pro Stock division last Saturday was a long-time coming. The three-year veteran of the division worked long hours and late nights along side his father, Mat, to prepare their No.53 for weekly battle. The hard work made the win that much sweeter and earned Purchase Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week honours.

“It’s just amazing. We put so much time and effort in to getting that first one. I’ve been chasing it for three years and you just don’t know how it feels until you finally get it. There was a lot of emotion,” Purchase said following the win.

Campbellford ChryslerPurchase started on the pole for the 20-lap main event and led every lap for his first victory, but not without some anxious moments. At the midway point of the race, he has a rearview mirror full of week one winner Justin Ramsay and defending champion Doug Anderson.

“I just kind of focused on the goal at hand,” Purchase said. “I blocked them out and I just held my line. We ran 20 good laps.”

Purchase spun out on lap 18 after contact with Leslie Mowat, but was returned to his spot under yellow.

“I thought I had it saved then it went around. I was relieved when I got my spot back,” Purchase added.

IMG_8553He led the final two laps to earn his first win. The win was Purchase’s second of the night after he won Best Appearing Car in the Pro Stock division to start the evening. The award is largely due to the team’s unique body style, a 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air.

“We weren’t intending for a Bel Air. We were actually shooting for a ’55 (Chevy). We started looking through scrap yards,” Purchase said. “I saw the two-door Bel Air and that’s what we went with.”

The team’s goal is to compete for the 2015 Pro Stock championship at Brighton, Purchase said. He hopes to put a metric chassis back in the winners circle and knock the Camaros off the pedestal.

“If we can put a metric car back on the map and have a good solid year and have some fun, that’s all our goal is.”

Purchase certainly proved last week he should be a part of the conversation in 2015.
