Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week – Tyler French

By Clayton Johns

IMG_7112BRIGHTON (May 21, 2015) – Bill’s Johns Comp 4 driver Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) is the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week for May 16. French has won three consecutive features to start the season. He hasn’t finished anywhere other than first, with three qualifying heat wins to his credit so far this season. Not too shabby for his first full season of racing.

French credits his early-season success to hard work and late nights throughout the week. The Trenton, Ont. native also spends time watching track video to get another perspective on his car’s performance.

“I buy the video from the track and then I would go home, watch my car, and then I would improve it for the next week,” said French. “I’ve made some changes and just keep making the car better and better every week.”

IMG_9790French competes as a member of the Dirty Fast Racing team, composed of Pro Stock driver Justin Ramsay and fellow Comp 4 pilots Shelby Mills and Adam Chapman. In addition to the team’s one-man pit crew, Brandon Carr, French’s success is largely due to Ramsay’s knowledge, he said.

“He’s been a Honda guy for years. I learned everything through Justin. Now we just all help each other out,” French said. “It’s nice having four people in the shop working on each others cars and giving out ideas.”

French’s 2015 ride was the backup car for Shelby Mills in 2014, which he campaigned on a part-time basis. Prior to that, his racing experience was a handful of spectator victories at Brighton. He decided to buy the Mills car last winter to go racing full-time. He rebuilt the car in the off-season, and the hard work has paid dividends so far this season.

Racing at Brighton Speedway is in French’s blood. His parents, Karen and John Jr., are both longtime officials at the speedway. French wasn’t always a race fan, he admits.

“I used to go there when I was younger and it wasn’t really my thing so I ended up staying home and watching my sister all the time. Then the one night I didn’t want to babysit, so I went and I got addicted.”

French has set his sights on a championship in 2015. So far, that night off from babysitting seems to be paying off. French will compete for his fourth straight win on Saturday, May 23 when Aecon and UCB Canada present a full card of racing.

French’s 2015 season is supported by Empey Tire, ABC Taxi, and Gilmour’s Meat Shop and Deli.
