Driver of the Week – First Brighton Modified Win Has Lucas Excited

By Clayton Johns

IMG_7305Mike Lucas earned his first career victory in Brighton’s Canadian Modified division last Saturday. The Belleville, Ont. native started fifth for the 25-lap feature.

Lucas trailed fourth-place starter Mitch Rosborough (No.36) until six laps to go. The third-year driver then made the move for the lead.

“I just followed the No.36 for a while and I thought it was time to go. I knew I was faster and I guess that was it,” says Lucas.

He admitted to being nervous in the final laps as he didn’t know how close the rest of the field was once he took the lead.

“Usually you’re waiting for the rest of the fast guys to come, wondering ‘am I going to hold them off? Are they coming?’ You can’t see behind you,” says Lucas. “As I went by every time, I was looking up at the scoreboard to see who was behind me.”

It didn’t matter, however, as Lucas led the final six circuits to secure his first win.

“It was pretty intense. I didn’t really expect it to happen that quick. I was pretty happy.

This season marks Lucas’ seventh season behind the wheel. The first four came in the track’s Pro Stock division before making the leap to the Canadian Modified ranks in 2013.

Lucas’ current ride is a 2002 Buzzard Chassis, but that’s about to change. He acquired a brand new 2015 Buzzard model and is working on preparing the new car, but refuses to miss a week in order to prepare the new car. A move to Pro Late Model is something Lucas aspires to try, however, he’s still excited while racing his modified.

“I think it’s a good time. It’s good racing. There’s lots of competition,” says Lucas.

Lucas has set a goal of finishing in the top-five in points this season. He feels the goal is realistic as his driving has improved considerably with the help of fellow drivers Derek Bowers and Doug Dolan. Lucas’ crew has also been instrumental in his success, including Mike’s father Larry Lucas, Wally Hodge, and Art Insley, who doubles as a sponsor with his company A&C Insley Property Maintenance. Lucas would also like to thank all of his family and sponsors for their dedicated support.

Mike Lucas 2015 season is supported by A&C Insley Property Maintenance, Patriots Excavating, Jensan Property Management, Luke’s Transport, Wilsons Tune-up, Q.M.C. , Belleville Trenton Slinger Service, and Belleville Starter and Alternator.
