Gregory dominates Danny Reid Memorial

By: Nicole Kleinsteuber

The last points night at Brighton Speedway Saturday night saw five-division champs crowned including Canadian Modified No. 1 Shawn Gregory who dominated the John’s Equipment 50-lap Danny Reid Memorial race.

The program was presented by QBT Excavating and featured the Vanderlaan Building Products Late Models, Bill’s Johns Mini Stocks, Bill’s Johns Comp 4 and the Quinte Septic Stingers.

Late Model Driver No. 57 Charlie Sandercock, Mini Stock No. 96 Cole Abrams, Comp 4 No. 43 Devon Kippen and Stinger No. 18 Carter Rhodes were crowned division champs.  Thunderstock driver No. 03 Justin Ramsay was declared season champ following last weekend’s Labour Day Classic win.

Gregory takes 15th annual Danny Reid

It only took No. 1 Shawn Gregory five laps to pass polesitter No. 39 Jonah Mutton in the 50-lap Danny Reid Memorial race on Saturday night. Gregory was flawless as he muscled his way through their crown jewel event in memory of former K5 driver Danny Reid who passed away while competing in the division in May of 2005.

No. 32 Doug O’Blenis proved to be Gregory’s biggest contender on the track as the pair chased the memorial and division championship bragging rights.  When the checkers flew it was Gregory who won with No. 07 Curtis King in second, O’Blenis third, No. 5 Wally Alderdice fourth and No. 51 Mike Freeman fifth.

Gregory won the inaugural Danny Reid Memorial race and was division champ in 2006.  He said this win meant a lot to him. “This just feels amazing,” Gregory said in victory lane.  “I ran with Danny for a few years in the Mod class and I won the night of (Danny’s passing).  This has always been a huge race for me just to try to do it again for their family and for my friends and family.  It worked out awesome.  I finally got it.”

Mowat makes it rain checkers

At the drop of the green flag No. 46 Brandon Mowat jumped on the lead from his second starting position and took off.  Mowat drove his 46 machine on the rails throughout the entire 30-lap late model affair.  Mowat was unstoppable even as No. 57 Charlie Sandercock tried to take the lead.  Sandercock took it on lap 25 but got loose coming into turn 2 and Mowat was able to snap up his top spot again.  Mowat rode to victory lane with No. 92 Adam Turner taking second, Sandercock in third, No. 5 Steve Baldwin fourth and No. 87 Andrew Hennessy fifth.

McLean takes Mini Stock win

No. 00 Travis McLean jumped out in front on the lead lap of the 15-lap Mini Stock feature and never looked back.  Lapped traffic slowed the pace as McLean tried to make it through the field with No. 7 AJ Rinaldi closing in.  When the track cleared it would be a mad dash to the finish for McLean as he parked it with No. 96 Cole Abrams in second, No. 14m Matthew Moore third, No. 12 Caleb Severn fourth and No. 72 Austin South in fifth.

Humphrey hauls it to victory lane

Polesitter No. 97 Kyle Gregory looked well on his way to securing another Comp 4 victory until almost halfway through the 15-lap feature.  On lap 7, No. 55J Jeff Humphrey pounced on the lead and rode to victory lane with No. 43 Devon Kippen in second, No. 44 Tommy Bailey third, No. 4 Chris Tufford fourth and No. 20 Corey Sager fifth.

Pickell parks it

No. 18 Carter Rhodes and No. 93 Jordan Pickell played a great game of cat and mouse throughout the 15-lap Stinger event.  The pair treated fans to a back-and-forth war for first but when a caution slowed the pace it was Pickell who came out on top.  The 93 drove to victory lane with No. 07 Megan Golden in second, No. 44 Mike Baudrie third, Rhodes fourth and No. 17 Gavin Rushlow fifth.
