Hennessy’s Win Earns Driver of the Week

IMG_7512BRIGHTON (June 25, 2015) – On the strength of his second victory of the 2015 season, Canadian Modified driver Andrew Hennessy has earned Driver of the Week honours for June 20.

The driver of the Custom Automotive No.87 became the first repeat winner in the division last Saturday after also winning on May 2. The Picton, Ont. pilot has shown plenty of consistency so far in 2015 with a top-five finish in each of his six starts so far this season.

“We haven’t changed much on the car. Everything’s going well so we’ve just stayed consistent,” said Hennessy. “That’s the biggest thing for me – not changing too much and just going with what you know.”

The 29-year-old, who works as a loader operator, recognizes the increased level of competition in the Canadian Modified division this season, demonstrated by five winners in six races.

IMG_7042“I think the whole class has stepped up. A lot of the guys have stepped up their program over the winter and spent more time in the shop,” said Hennessy.

Racing in traffic is something Hennessy has nearly perfected. Brighton’s handicap rules force the previous week’s top finishers to start near the back of the field. With six consecutive top-five finishes, Hennessy typically starts at the rear.

“If you make the right decisions in traffic and you’re the first one at the front, usually you can hold on to it if everything else goes right,” said Hennessy. “If you get in the wrong lane, then you might just have to follow someone the rest of the night.”

Hennessy is the current point-leader with a narrow 20-point lead – equivalent to two feature finishing positions – over rival and friend Dan Ferguson. With well over half a season still on the schedule, Hennessy has maintained the edge in the consistency department over the rest of the field. He hopes he can maintain that level and avoid the trouble that cost him a championship 2014.

“I usually have a strong start and then something seems to get in the way towards the end, whether that’s blown engines or getting in to a wreck. You just have to stay consistent and hope luck stays on your side,” said Hennessy.

This season has had a new dynamic for Hennessy, who is helping his younger brother, Josh Hennessy, behind the controls of his own modified. This season marks the rookie campaign for Josh, 27, who purchased Ryan Scott’s championship car over the off-season.

“I enjoy racing with him and teaching him how to do things the right way. I look forward to making him one of the guys to beat each week,” said Hennessy. “I like being a big brother. It makes it fun all over again.”
