Josh Read’s Hat-Trick Captures Driver of the Week

By Clayton Johns

IMG_8380BRIGHTON (August 27, 2015) – It’s been an impressive coming out party for Trenton, Ont. native Josh Read in the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 division over the past month. The veteran driver made a return to Brighton Speedway on July 18 and has been almost unstoppable since. In six starts since, Read has yet to finish outside the top-five and is now on a three-race win streak. Those impressive stats have earned him Driver of the Week honours for the week ending in August 22.

“The car just seems to be working on the outside for me. The right tires make a big difference. I spoke to Brandon Wilkie, who built the car, and he told me what tires to put on it,” Read explained. “As soon as I did that, it started working really well out there.”

The first win came on August 8 and ended a 10 season winless streak for Read.

“It was awesome. It was one of those things where you start to feel you don’t have it anymore,” Read said of the relief the win provided.

After rules were changed mid-season to make Read’s car legal at Brighton, he welcomed the chance to return to his home racetrack. Read had started the season racing in the Rookie division at Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday nights.

IMG_8373“I love Brighton. It’s home to me. It’s where I grew up. My whole family raced there: my father (Pete Read) and my uncle (Paul Read) raced here,” Read said. “My whole family’s been there. When they opened the rules up so I could bring my car down, that just made my day.”

Saturday night racing on Brighton’s dirt is a family affair for Read. His step-son, Bailey Calbury-Reid, 16, began racing in the Comp 4 division midway through the season alongside him as well.

“I love it. It gives us more time together and we bond a lot better over this. He’s always wanted to do it and I was kind of afraid to put him in a car. But I finally said he’s got to do it and he wants to, so put him in it,” Read said.

“It’s just about having fun, that’s all it is. My wife and kids love it and then we got my son Bailey a car. It’s kind of more for him to get in to it.”

While Read only returned to Brighton in the middle of the season, he is far from a rookie. He began racing at the age of 16 in the late model division in one of his father’s former cars. He then took to racing his own cars in the 4-cylinder, Pro Stock, Bomber and, most recently, on asphalt with the Hurricane Midget series.

With this season going as strong as it, Read plans to challenge for the Comp 4 division championship in 2016 before challenging himself with a purpose-built racecar in two years.

“I’m going to run that car again next season and the following season go to a Modified,” Read said. “I’ve always wanted to, it’s just that the funds weren’t always there.”

He hopes his racing career will continue to blossom, especially now that the skill is second-nature every time he straps in to the racing seat.

“It’s one of those things that just comes to me because I’ve been doing it so long. I never really had the car to win. I was always up there with everybody, but it wouldn’t quite do it for me.”

He certainly has given himself the tools to be at the front every week. Read will try for his fourth consecutive win on Saturday, August 29 when the Comp 4 division returns to action.

Tickets for Comfort Zone Heating & Air Conditiong and Behan Construction Race Night are just $10. Spectator gates will open at 5:00pm before the first green flag at 7:00pm. Complete event information is available online atwww.brightonspeedway.com.
