Potts, O’Blenis, Ramsay, French Win On Behan Construction and Comfort Zone Heating & Air Conditioning Night

By Clayton Johns

BRIGHTON (August 30, 2015) – Sixty-one stock cars set a blistering pace at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night at the track’s 48th season of racing continued on Behan Construction and Comfort Zone Heating & Air Conditioning night. The night’s racing for four divisions was completed in two hours and 18 minutes before the always entertaining annual mechanics races took to the track.

Potts Shakes Bad Luck For Second Win

IMG_3560One week after landing upside down on the frontstretch, Brighton’s Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan) parked his Fowl Mood Racing ride in victory lane following the 30-lap RUSH Pro Late Model feature. Trenton’s Kyle Sopaz (No.12 Lots and Lines) led until a lap 10 caution after starting on the front row with Belleville native Nathan Bosma (No.79 Pro Cut Property Maintenance).

Potts, however, got the better of Sopaz on that restart to take over the point. The race ran caution free for the final 20 laps of the race as Potts and Sopaz broke away from a field that could not separate from side-by-side racing. Potts used his advantageous track position to navigate lapped traffic effortlessly and sealed the deal for his second win of the season. Sopaz finished 1.42 seconds behind Potts. Trenton’s Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) completed the podium finishers.

Third Win For O’Blenis

IMG_3548After a string of bad luck over the past month, Napanee native Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care) claimed his third feature win of the season in an action-packed 25-lap A-Main for the Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modifieds. It took a while for O’Blenis to get to the front as Wooler’s Curtis King (No.07 Ajax Nissan) held the point position from lap two.

At the midway point of the race with King leading, O’Blenis raced side-by-side with Shawn Gregory (No.1 CPS Wood Products) for second in a six-lap duel. O’Blenis eventually took the spot and then used the top lane on a restart to take the lead from King on lap 21. O’Blenis selected the outside lane on a final restart with three laps to go and used his chosen line to regain the lead and hold off King by 0.48 seconds at the finish line while Gregory claimed the third.

King, Gregory and fourth-place finisher Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) were disqualified upon post-race technical inspections for illegal bump stops.

Ramsay Rebounds For Ninth Win

IMG_3531One week following a DNF due to mechanical problems, Brighton Automotive Pro Stock driver and Rossmore native Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) earned his ninth feature win of the season at Brighton Speedway. The race was also the second Duel in the Dirt series home track qualifier at Brighton. Ramsay won the first qualifier as well on June 13.

Second-place starter Brian Cross (No.08 Sobey’s) of Picton was the early leader despite challenges from Ramsay and Brighton’s Jonah Mutton (No.39 NOCO Fuels). Cross led until a caution at lap nine reset the field. On the ensuing restart, Ramsay took over the point, but Cross remained within two car lengths of the race leader. One final caution with 10 laps to go gave Cross his final shot at the lead, but he couldn’t find his way past the dominant point leader Ramsay, who clinched his ninth victory of the season and third in August. Cross settled for second ahead of Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors). Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Landscape Service) and Jamie Marshall (No.55 C&L Upholstery).

French Finds His Way Back To The Front

IMG_3575Trenton’s Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) took the lead from 17 year-old Brighton youngster Austin Reid (No.85 Young Drivers) with two laps to go and let the remainder of the race to win his seventh Bill’s Johns Comp 4 feature of the season. The win was French’s first in a month after he dominated the first half of the season.

Belleville native Emily Weedman (No.87 Dent Masters) led early on after starting on the pole, but surrendered the lead to Reid after a busy battle for the point position throughout the opening six laps that also included Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi). Reid’s lead was erased on lap 10 by the only caution of the race when Adam Chapman (No.07 Int’l Truckload Services) came to a stop in turn four. French got a fantastic restart and made the pass on Reid with two to on route to the victory. Josh Read (No.29 Stinky Canuck), who won the previous three features, finished third.

Mechanics Races Offer Thrill For Unsung Heroes

IMG_3611At the conclusion of the night’s action, drivers from each of the four classes had the option to allow a crewmember to drive their car in a 10-lap mechanics race. The fun event allows the wrenchmen to get behind the wheel for a few laps.

Sam Hazelwood won the Pro Stock Mechanics Race driving Jonah Mutton’s No.39. In the Canadian Modified race, Bob Beatty drove Shawn Gregory’s No.1 to victory lane. In Pro Late Model action, Paul Turner piloted Andy Mayhew’s No.1 to a victory while Matt French parked Shelby Mills’ No.78 in victory lane in the Comp 4 race.
