Ramsay Earns Driver Of The Month With Near Perfect July

By Clayton Johns

03 RamsayBRIGHTON (July 30, 2015) – On the strength of two feature wins and three top-two finishes, Justin Ramsay has earned Driver of the Month for July at Brighton Speedway. The Trenton, Ont. driver also won four consecutive heat races throughout the month and was just 10 points shy of the maximum 650 points available.

“I’ve just been on top of my game this year. I’ve been talking a lot with (Merrittville and Humberstone regular) Jason Fontaine. He helps me quite a bit with ideas for setup,” said Ramsay. “Our cars are pretty well identical, so he’s helped me quite a bit.”

Ramsay started the month by setting a new track record in single-car time trials at the Canada Day Championships on July 4. The driver of the No.03 Pro Stock turned a lap of 16.573 seconds around the 1/3-mile oval, obliterating Doug Anderson’s 2012 record of 17.289 seconds.

03Ramsay“I was lost for words. It’s pretty cool. I didn’t win it by much, but it’s still a track record. It’s awesome,” said Ramsay.

After 9 feature events this season, Ramsay has compiled six wins in total to boost him to the top of the championship standings with a 105-point advantage over Anderson. Similarly, his Dirty Fast Racing teammates in the Comp 4 division, girlfriend Shelby Mills and Tyler French, sit first and second respectively in that division’s standings.

“We almost need to get somebody on track in the Canadian Modified and Pro Late Model class so we can sweep the whole track,” laughed Ramsay. “That would be cool.”

Ramsay is set for a busy weekend in his Empey Tire Camaro. The first combined race of the Pro Stock Duel in the Dirt series takes place at Humberstone Speedway on Sunday following double features at Brighton on Saturday. The team will also attempt to run the Monday’s special event at Merrittville Speedway.

“We’re going to do every race we can, as long as the car isn’t tore up. We’ll race whatever we can that doesn’t interfere with Brighton Speedway,” said Ramsay.

The Duel in the Dirt Series will also visit Merrittville and Ohsweken in September before ending at Brighton’s Applefest Weekend September 25-26. It’s the first year Ohsweken and Humberstone have also participated in the series.

“It is exciting. When they told us it was going to be with all four tracks, I thought it was pretty cool. They’re finally doing something like that for smaller classes,” said Ramsay. “I’m pretty excited to try Ohsweken because it’s a lot bigger and different, but I’m excited for all of them.”

Back at Brighton, Ramsay remains focused on a consistent pace towards capturing his first Pro Stock championship.

“I want to try and take Doug Anderson away from his sixth championship, but anything can happen (with two months left),” said Ramsay.

Ramsay has installed a new and bigger 25-gallon fuel cell in his ride in anticipation of the 50-lap Duel races. It’s forced him to reconfigure the weight placement in his car with the new cell weighing 75lbs more than the previous one.

“I’ve been wanting to do it all year, but it’s been such a tight points battle. Now that I’ve got this cushion, it gives me a little more breathing room to try some things to make the car quicker,” he added.

Ramsay will be on track at intermission during Saturday’s Bellevue Fabricating and Campbellford Chrysler Fan Appreciation night for autographs with all fans in attendance. Gates will open at 5:00pm and Racing will begin at 7:00pm.
