Reid’s First Win Earns Driver of the Week

By Clayton Johns

IMG_7904BRIGHTON (August 6, 2015) – It took parts of four seasons, but Austin Reid finally shook the monkey off his back to claim his first career Comp 4 win at Brighton Speedway last Saturday night.

The 17 year-old driver of the Young Driver Canada / Kids R Kool No.85 drove to the lead on lap five of the 15-lap main event and cruised around he 1/3-mile oval over the final 10 laps to claim a well-deserved victory.

“It felt pretty good to final get a win. It feels good to finally have the hard work pay off,” said the soft-spoken Reid in a phone interview this week.

The youngster who calls Brighton, Ont. his home is on the upswing and is putting together his best season to date. He currently sits second in the division’s point standings, just 60 notches below Shelby Mills on the championship totem pole.

What’s most impressive about Reid is he performs the majority of the maintenance and prep work on the car himself. It’s a seldom-heard accomplishment in itself for the driver who just graduated high school in June.

IMG_8189“It’s pretty much just me for the most part. My friend Nick helps me out quite a bit when I ask him. My dad comes by once and a while as well,” Reid explained. “Adam Whaley’s crew helps me out a fair bit at the track. So do my dad (Jerry Kimmerly) and my mom (Wendy Reid).”

Reid comes from a racing family, which sparked his interest in the sport at a young age. His grandfather, Danny Reid, raced in the Canadian Modified division. Since passed, the division’s drivers honour Reid with a memorial race each September. Until Austin started his own career at the age of 14, his father raced in the track’s Pro Stock division.

A childhood spent watching his grandfather races Canadian Modifieds at Brighton Speedway has Reid eager to hit the track in an open-wheel car sooner than later.

“I definitely hope to end up in a Modified sometime. I grew up watching my grandfather race them so I enjoy that class. All the classes have some pretty good racing,” he said.

Reid will head east to Loyalist College in September where he will study to become a Motorpower Technician, a trade that will certainly help his weekend racing career.

“It will benefit me a lot when I’m working on the cars and diagnosing the problems. It’ll help a fair bit in making the cars go faster,” said Reid, who has done remarkable thus far.

Reid knows earning his first championship won’t be easy against tough competitors like Mills and Tyler French, who sits tied for second in points with Reid. He’ll have to up the ante.

“I’ll have to be a little more aggressive than I usually am and continue to be consistent. I can’t give as much space and I need to drive it a littler harder,” said Reid.

After a rough start to a career that started in 2012, where wrecks and rolls derailed each season, adding a championship trophy to the garage would make it all worthwhile.

“My first year racing I rolled on opening night and didn’t get much seat time. The following year, I got turned in front of the field and got hit head on. Last year, I hit the wall,” Reid said. “That would mean a fair bit because of the last couple of years I’ve had.”

Reid will be back in action this Saturday night as part of a full card of racing presented by Rapid Rad and Star 93.3, featuring the Southern Ontario Sprints. Race time is 7:00pm. Complete event information can be found at www.brightonspeedway.com.
