Wilson Earns Labour Day Classic Victory At Brighton

By Josh Gordon

BRIGHTON (Sept. 7, 2015) – The second and final night of Brighton Speedway’s Labour Day Classic presented by Ultramar CST provided as much action-packed entertainment as its predecessor with 21 Southern Ontario Sprints and 57 stock cars packed into the one-third mile oval. Fans were treated to special topless Vanderlaan Building Products RUSH Pro Late Models and Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modifieds, as well as a wingless Sprint Car dash.

‘Joyceville Jet’ Returns to Winners Circle

IMG_2200Rick Wilson (No. 42w) was due for a win. The Joyceville native came into the second straight night of Southern Ontario Sprints action at the Brighton Speedway winless on the year and without a victory since last year’s Labour Day Classic. But Wilson drew the pole position after a solid heat race and that was all he needed to break the curse.

Wilson started on the front row of the 25-lap main event alongside Glenn Styres (No. 0). The two raced side-by-side for the first two laps before “The Ohsweken Flyer” spun coming out of turn four bringing out the first and only caution of the race.

For the rest of the race, Wilson battled to stay ahead of Southern Ontario Sprints point leader Mitch Brown (No. 10b). He ultimately prevailed, never succeeding to Brown, beating him by half a second.

Brown’s second place finish, in conjunction with a disappointing 17th place finish for Styres, meant that he clinched the Southern Ontario Sprints championship with one race still remaining.

Jones Doesn’t Need Wings

Following the evening’s main events, six Southern Ontario Sprints took part in the Simon Pettit Memorial Wingless Dash for Cash. Warren Mahoney (No. 25) and Chris Jones (No. 11j) brought the field to life for the 12-lap dash. Although it was tight racing in the first laps of the race, Jones pulled away from the rest of the field and won by more than three seconds ahead of Mike Burkin (No. 48) and Kyle Fraser (No. 01).

Two for Turner

IMG_2439Adam Turner (No. 92) was on a mission from the start of the special 40-lap Vanderlaan Building Products RUSH Pro Late Model topless feature. The Picton, Ontario native started on the pole and led all 40 laps on route to his second victory of the year.

The victory did not come easy for Turner however as he had to hold off fifth-place starter Corey Earl (No. 11) and fifteenth-place starter Charlie Sandercock (No. 57) over the last 15 laps. That challenge was escalated with a pair of late cautions. Both Earl and Sandercock had fast cars on restarts but Turner was able to narrowly edge them. For Turner it was his first win since June 13th.

O’Blenis’ Sunday Night Special

IMG_2465Andrew Hennessy (No. 87) and Doug O’Blenis (No. 32) started on the front row for the 30-lap topless Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modified feature. Following two cautions within the first six laps, fourth-place starter Shawn Gregory (No. 1) and seventh place starter Dan Ferguson (No. 11) had joined Hennessey and O’Blenis in a four-car battle for the lead.

O’Blenis led the pack of four cars by holding onto the bottom line, not giving any room to Hennessy and Ferguson. Gregory saw the three-car battle on the low line and tried to pass them high but was not able to get past.

A caution on lap 27 set up a three-lap dash to the finish. When green was displayed, Ferguson got into the tires and Gregory faded, leaving O’Blenis and Hennessey to duke it out for the feature win. On the final lap, the two cars raced extremely hard for a race that only had appearance points. Despite a lot of contact coming out of turn four, O’Blenis was able to hold off Hennessey and win the Labour Day topless feature.

Ramsay Sweeps Weekend

Justin Ramsay started 11th for the 30-lap Brighton Automotive Pro Stock feature but that didn’t stop “The Rossmore Rocket” as he was up to 2nd place on lap 14. The only car between Ramsay and his second victory of the weekend was Jonah Mutton (No. 39).

Ramsay slowly gained ground on Mutton over the next six laps and like the nine cars Ramsay had already passed, Mutton soon found himself in Ramsay’s rearview mirror.

Over the last 10 laps, all Ramsay did was lap cars on route to his 11th victory of the year. Ramsay was so dominate on the second straight night of Pro Stock racing that only seven of 17 starters finished on the lead lap of a race.

Read Takes Two

Colin Tracy (No. 77) and Bella Cosstick (No. 24) brought the field to green but Josh Read (No. 29) soon lead the 15-lap dash for cash. Read passed Cosstick coming out of a lap 3 caution for a Luke Toms (No. 19) oil spill. Read finished the race unchallenged as he picked up his second win of the weekend. Tyler French (No. 0), Shelby Mills (No. 78), Cosstick and Tracey completed the top five.

Next Week at Brighton Speedway – Sept. 12

The fifth-annual McDougall Insurance & Financial $6000-to-Win 65-Lap Excel Tower Great Crate Race takes centre stage next weekend alongside the John’s Equipment presentation of the Danny Reid Memorial 50 Lap Canadian Modified Race.
