BRIGHTON (June 16, 2015) – The most powerful stock cars in the world invade Brighton Speedway on Saturday night when the World of Outlaws Late Models Series roll in to Brighton Speedway for the Dibbits Excavating and Vanderlaan Building Products Mud Slinger 50 presented by Excel Tower Service.

The Outlaws, who boast 800 horsepower each, will visit Brighton exactly two years to the day from their inaugural appearance at the 1/3-mile oval on June 20, 2013.

Darrell Lanigan of Union, Kentucky won the inaugural event. Lanigan held off Josh Richards (Shinnston, WV) and Chub Frank (Bear Lake, Pa) for the victory. Lanigan is currently third in the championship standings after 16 events and winless in Outlaw races this season. A Brighton repeat would help boost the turnaround effort for Lanigan’s No.29 team.

“We try to win them all,” laughed Lanigan. “It’s definitely neat when you go back to a track you’ve already won at. We should have some pretty good notes on the track and hopefully be pretty decent.”

Richards currently anchors the second position in the standings with three wins on tour this season. After sitting out of the car for a full season in 2014 for medical reasons, Richards is excited about his success so far in 2015.

“We have a new team this year and some changes with our engines and the car. Getting everything to flow as one (has been tough) and we’re finally getting there so I’m really looking forward to this trip,” Richards said in a phone interview from his home in Shinnston, West Virginia.

Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Georgia is the current Outlaw point leader. Clanton has four Outlaw wins this season, but his last win on the tour came in February during the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park.

“So far so good this season. We feel like we should have won a couple of more races than we have,” Clanton said over the phone from his Georgia-based operation.

The drivers say they’re excited to return to Brighton after an exciting shootout in the series’ first visit two summers ago.

“I remember Brighton was a small little track, but you could race well on it. It seems like in that part (of the country) the dirt races really well and it doesn’t seem to matter if its slick or if it’s wet, it races well,” Richards said. “You can usually make something happen on tracks like that.”

“It was demanding all night long. The racing was pretty phenomenal. It has two or three grooves and you had to be up on the wheel,” Clanton said.

“It gets pretty racey because you can race around the top or race around the bottom,” Lanigan said. “It gets slick and you can pretty much race all over it.”

The Outlaw drivers have only seen Brighton Speedway once before, but new tracks don’t intimidate a group that races over 50 nights at two dozen race tracks a year.

“We’re used to travelling to different venues. We’re up to the challenge of a different racetrack every night,” Clanton said. “As crazy as it sounds, we like going to different places instead of the same place every time.”

Saturday’s race at Brighton is the second race of a grueling stretch for the Outlaw drivers that includes seven races over 10 days, beginning Thursday night at Fonda Speedway in New York and culminating in the Firecracker 100 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa on June 27.

“It’s just a matter of being consistent and getting to a point where you’re comfortable with your car and not having any mechanical failures or getting torn up. That’s probably the toughest part,” Richards said. “Anytime you have that many races back-to-back, you don’t have as much recovery time. It’s a lot of fun and it’s exciting.”

“You just have to have everything ready to go. Hopefully we have all the pieces in a row and everything will go well,” Clanton explained.

Southern Ontario Sprints Tour Resumes

The Southern Ontario Sprints tour resumes Saturday alongside the Outlaws after a two-week hiatus. Brantford’s Mitch Brown is the current point leader with a 29-point advantage over Picton’s Chris Jones. Keith Dempster, Glenn Styres, and sophomore driver Cory Turner complete the current top-five.

Brown won the series last visit to Brighton on May 17 and also won three times at the track in 2014. Jones, however, is the most recent winner on the tour after picking up the checkers at South Buxton Raceway on June 6. This Saturday is race four of the 13-stop tour.

Canadian Modifieds Look to Impress

The OilGARD Canadian Modifieds will look to continue their impressive string of action-packed racing. The weekly division at Brighton has seen five different winners in five races this season. Picton’s Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) is the most recent victor, taking the main event last Saturday on Fan Appreciation night. Andrew Hennessy (No.87 Custom Automotive), Curtis King (No.07 Ajax Nissan), Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care) and Mike Lucas (No.74 A&C Insley Property Maintenance) have also earned victories. Every driver will be eager to park in victory lane with extra eyes focused on Brighton from across the continent.

Doug O’Blenis is the current point leader, holding a slim 5-point advantage over Ferguson. Hennessy sits 20 points back of the championship lead. King and Lucas sit fourth and fifth, respectively.
